AEM Releases Powerful and Stylish Intercooler System for Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

From rims to roof, and from bumper to bumper, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X 2.0 Liter Turbo is one of the hottest and most sought after imports on the streets today. With an incredibly peppy 291 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque rated engine, Mitsubishi has set the standard for sport tuned sedans for the driving enthusiast. With aggressive body styling, race worthy suspension, Super All Wheel Control and amazing Brembo brakes, the EVO-X is a formidable road warrior.

To support the need for identity, expression, and customization many Evolution X drivers crave, Mitsubishi EVO-X owners are relentless in their pursuit of power and AEM has answered their call with an upgraded intercooler that decreases the charge temperature and increases flow to the engine. The AEM Intercooler system comes with the intercooler, all mounting brackets, and new charge pipes finished in AEM gunmetal gray. The charge pipes have an optional 1/8” NPT fitting for additional devices such as a pressure sensor, water injection or temperature probe.

Through extensive testing and research, the AEM engineering team has developed an innovative intercooler kit for the Evo X. This intercooler system is complete with the use of AEM's 2102-A intercooler core and 2102-B charge pipes.

The system also offers reinforced silicone couplers, and supports the use of optional T-bolt clamps (part number 23-201) which are all designed to bolt onto a stock turbo configuration and directly increase horsepower and torque to the wheels. Initial temperature and pressure testing procedures were conducted on the vehicle under real road driving conditions followed by controlled flow bench testing to set a baseline for prototype development. Various core sizes and end tank designs were then tested using CFD analysis and dyno testing throughout the R&D process.

By exploring various innovative ideas and theories towards the goal of producing a better performing and highly efficient intercooler kit, the AEM engineering team revealed that a larger inlet end tank was required to properly reduce inlet recirculation and pressure drop. This is apparent by the offset of the intercooler seen from the lower front grill.

The 2102-A intercooler core's oversized inlet end tank incorporates another unique feature improving airflow distribution and performance over the OE core design. Within the inlet tank, an air guide vane is used to direct the compressed air for even flow throughout the intercooler.

This design increases surface area contact upon exiting the intercooler core and more evenly distributes the air than the OE core. This allows for a more dramatic temperature drop across the intercooler which was seen in testing throughout the boost range. Including the 2102-B charge pipe's increased diameter, the final dyno testing revealed an estimated peak midrange gain of 13.1 horsepower and 14.9 ft-lbs of torque at 4600rpm.

Further dyno testing was conducted with the addition of the AEM cold air intake system (part number 21-678C) along with the new intercooler kit to reveal much higher estimated gains over stock components.

AEM has engineered a collection of high performance upgrades for the Mitsubishi Evo X, including the 2102-A intercooler core and required 2102-B charge pipes, 21-678C cold air intake system, and the 29-0000 strut bar. The release of these application specific upgrades offers Mitsubishi Evolution X drivers reliable and well-designed performance modifications capable of boosting power with a high level of style. All of the modifications listed, including the AEM intercooler system can be installed using the step-by step installation guide.
