Raymond Arellano’s Volkswagen Jetta may have five doors, but this Jetta SportWagen has nothing in common with the faux wood panel covered station wagon that the Griswold family drove to Wally World in the classic 1983 film National Lampoon’s Vacation. In fact this German engineered Volkswagen SportWagen blends Autobahn inspired performance, with versatility, and an EPA estimated 33 highway miles per gallon.

When asked why he chose to customize a wagon, Raymond responded “Wagons are so few and far between in the states. Only a small amount of people think wagons are cool. But when you have one that looks like this, everyone wants one. It’s an eye catcher!” Even the fact that Volkswagen chose to use a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine makes the Jetta SportWagen unique. “I built the SportWagen because it’s a nice and small compact wagon with a touch of European style. I thought it would be great to see one lowered with aftermarket wheels and some engine mods,” said Arellano.

To achieve the perfect stance Raymond lowered his SportWagen with an H&R Race Spring Lowering Kit. This lowering kit from H&R lowered the front 2.0-inches and the rear was lowered 1.75”. The SportWagen rolls on new for 2015 MKW Alloy RSR wheels. To showcase the new Road Street Race (RSR) wheels offered by MKW Alloy, Raymond fitted R701 Anthracite Gray 19” wheels on the passenger side and R702 Black Machined 19” wheels on the driver side. The MKW Alloy RSR wheels are wrapped in Kumho Ecsta LE Sport 235/35R19 tires front and rear. Chrome lug nuts and locks from the Lug Nut Guys finish off the wheel and tire package.

With the AEM cold air intake system the car feels less restricted and really opens up on acceleration
When asked what he thought of his new AEM intake, number 21-733C, Raymond replied “With the AEM cold air intake system the car feels less restricted and really opens up on acceleration.”
Helping to turn those 19” race wheels a little quicker is a Borla Exhaust Spitfire Boomer Muffler with a dual outlet pipe, and a Volkswagen Performance tuning chip. No respectable sport compact build would be complete without an air intake system from the leaders in cold air intake systems, AEM Induction Systems. Raymond fitted AEM short ram intake system 21-733C onto his Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen. When asked what he thought of his new AEM intake, Raymond replied “With the AEM cold air intake system the car feels less restricted and really opens up on acceleration. That deep intake sound combined with the Borla exhaust really makes this wagon into a true SportWagen.”

The Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen’s European styling was helped along by several exterior and interior accessories. An R-Line sport front bumper with clear side marker lights adds to the wagons sporty looks, as does the O-Nex.com HID headlight kit and full Canbus LED light kits inside and out. Other small touches take Raymond’s Volkswagen to the next level. Completing the true euro sport wagon look is the Thule AeroBlade Edge base roof racks. After all, a real euro sport wagon needs a place to haul snowboards or mountain bikes.
