The Mini has a long and illustrious history dating back to 1959. The Mini has been so influential in the automotive industry that it can be considered an English equivalent of the German Volkswagen Beetle, or the Italian Fiat 500. The original Mini was designed for the British Motor Corporation (BMC) by famed car designer Sir Alec Issigonis. John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company and builder of race cars, was friends with Sir Alec Issigonis. John Cooper saw the potential to create a performance car out of the Mini and after appealing to BMC management the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S were born in 1961.

Advanced Engine Management (AEM) is also a pioneer in the automotive performance aftermarket tracing its roots back to 1987. In 1994 AEM developed one of the first packaged cold air intake systems and helped mold the future of bolt on performance products. This spirit of ingenuity has been passed along through AEM over the years and can be seen in the innovative AEM cold air intake configuration for the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Mini Cooper S, Mini Cooper S Clubman, and Mini Cooper John Cooper Works models with 1.6 liter turbocharged engines. Available as a do-it-yourself install and upgrade, the 21-721C AEM cold air intake is a twist on functional and stylish intake engineering.

The Mini Cooper Cold Air Intake 21-721C transforms the phony OEM hood scoop into a functional source of cold air as well as retaining use of the OEM fresh air duct. Bringing in cooler outside air can result in more power. The AEM 2011-13 Mini Cooper S, Mini Cooper S Clubman, and Mini Cooper John Cooper Works cold air intake design features an AEM Dryflow Air Filter for low restriction without compromising engine protection. The 21-721C Mini Cooper S cold air intake AEM dry filter 21-2037D-HK is washable and reusable. AEM dry filters use a synthetic filter media and do not require oil which allows for quick, easy cleaning. A Filter Minder gauge is included with the Mini Cooper S cold air intake to indicate when it's time to clean the washable AEM Dryflow air filter.

"Excellent air inlet temperature management ensures consistent and reliable power," says product engineer John Concialdi. "In the 21-721C the fake OEM hood scoop is converted into a real performance feature that ducts ambient air directly to the intake air filter box. A high temperature silicone foam gasket seals the scoop duct to the air filter box preventing hot engine compartment air from entering the intake and the OEM lower air duct is also retained for maximum flow to the intake system."

A rotationally molded air intake tube was utilized to direct cool intake air smoothly from the new AEM 2011, 2012, and 2013 Mini Cooper S, Mini Cooper S Clubman, and Mini Cooper John Cooper Works air filter box, through the AEM Dryflow air filter and then into the turbocharger. Computational fluid dynamics were used to help optimize the size and number of pleats on the AEM Dryflow air filter and to help determine the size of the cross-linked polyethlyene intake tube for mid-range torque gains and increased high-end horsepower. Flow bench testing helped validate that the 21-721C AEM cold air intake design provides superior airflow over the factory air filter box.

AEM made sure the system would last the life of the car. A high quality, high-temperature material was chosen for the air box and hood scoop. The included heat shield is placed between the turbocharger and air intake for additional heat protection. The entire AEM cold air intake, as well as the AEM Dryflow air filter is backed by the AEM limited lifetime warranty.

Dyno testing on the 21-721C cold air intake shows an estimated gain of 6 horsepower @ 5650 RPM and an estimated increased in torque of 9 ft-lbs @ a mere 2710 RPM. The 21-721C cold air intake system is a perfect upgrade for any Mini enthusiast looking to add more power and better performance to their little Cowley, Oxford built British sports coupe.
