The AEM performance cold air intake system for the 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 increases performance and leaves all the stock emissions control equipment in place

While early Toyota 4Runner models weren’t much more than a Toyota Pickup truck with a camper shell on the back, subsequent generations have transformed the 4Runner into a mid-size semi-luxury SUV which still retains some of its original off-road capabilities. While most the 4Runner’s competitors have switched to uni-body construction crossover SUV’s, the 4Runner still retains a body-on-frame design.

Toyota equipped the 2003-2009 4Runner with the 4.0 L 1GR-FE V6 engine rated at 245 horsepower as standard equipment. A 245 horsepower V6 isn’t anything to laugh at, but who wouldn’t want to bolt on a few more ponies? This is why AEM Intakes designed cold air intake system 22-682C for the 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 N210 fourth generation Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6. This Cold Air Intake System is precision-engineered to provide a noticeable increase in horsepower, better acceleration, and improved engine sound for the Toyota 4Runner.

The AEM cold air intake system for 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner V6 models is a little different from the average cold air intake system. AEM Intakes designers chose to retain the use of the stock air filter box when designing the 22-682C cold air intake system. Retaining the stock air filter box allowed AEM Intakes designers to increase performance while keeping inlet air temperatures, and air / fuel ratios within factory specifications. Utilizing the stock air box maintains the use of the factory cold air inlet near the front wheel, allowed the CAI system to retain all factory air intake connections, as well as leaving all the stock emissions control equipment undisturbed.

Testing revealed that the factory air intake ducting was partially to blame for intake tract restriction in the stock system. Included in the 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 cold air intake system is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube which helps to reduce the restriction found in the stock air ducting, and allows the engine to breathe easier. Restriction isn’t the only trouble with the stock air intake as it also creates turbulence in the incoming air. The mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube used in this cold air intake has a smooth and consistent internal circumference for reduced airflow turbulence. To ensure that the cold air intake tubes will look great for years to come, it is finished in a charcoal gray powder coat. A custom designed air accelerator is affixed to the end of the air intake tubes and is then inserted into the factory cold air intake source in the wheel well. This ensures that the 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 draws cool, fresh, and more dense air from outside the engine compartment.

AEM Dryflow air filters are designed to flow more air than typical paper automotive air filters, and because of this AEM synthetic air filter, number 28-20281, is able to reduce restriction inherent to using stock disposable automotive air filters. Advanced AEM Dryflow, non-woven, oil free, synthetic air filter media is at the heart of the replacement AEM air filter for 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner V6 models which allows for easy cleaning, durable service, and excellent filtration without the need for air filter oil.

All of the design features of the 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 cold air intake system work together to deliver increased horsepower, torque, and improved acceleration. On the dyno, 22-682C produced an estimated 6 more horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 5 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm over the stock system. Additional horsepower and torque can come in handy when merging onto a highway, towing, or trying to tackle an obstacle off-road.

Due to its retention of a body on frame design, the Toyota 4Runner is considered a mid-size semi-luxury SUV that still retains some of its original off-road capabilities
