The Volkswagen (VW) Golf has been in continuous production since 1974. North Americans will remember the first generation VW Golf as the Volkswagen Rabbit. The first gen VW Golf/Rabbit was intended as the successor to Volkswagen’s successful, but outdated, air-cooled VW Beetle. At the time of its introduction the Volkswagen Golf was one of the first commercially successful front-wheel drive hatchbacks. Over the years there have been several variations of the Volkswagen Golf, however the Golf GTI (initially the Rabbit GTI in North America) almost single handedly spawned the “Hot Hatch” movement. The idea was simple, take an economy car, outfit it with a performance engine and suspension package, and suddenly the car was both sporty and practical.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T and 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf 2.0T, GTI 2.0T, and Golf R 2.0T AEM short ram air intake system
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T and 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf 2.0T, GTI 2.0T, and Golf R 2.0T AEM short ram air intake system is designed to deliver as much unrestricted air as the engine can use with the fewest bends possible

The same tradition of performance and practicality applies to the 2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8-liter turbo engine and its various trim levels. The 2015 and 2016 Golf GTI is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged engine capable of producing 40 more horsepower and nearly 60 lb-ft more torque than the standard 2015 VW Golf 1.8T. Volkswagen has recently taken its best-selling Hot Hatch model and upped the ante with the highly tuned VW Golf R edition. The 2015 Volkswagen Golf R uses the same 2.0T engine as the 2015 GTI, however it’s tuned to produce over 290 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. With the Golf’s compact size the Golf R 2.0T is said to accelerate from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.9 seconds.

With the AEM short ram intake 21-746WR for 2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T and 2016 Volkswagen Golf 2.0T models owners can narrow the performance gap between the 1.8T and a friend’s 2015 GTI 2.0T; or even a 2015 VW GTI owner looking to close in on a Golf R. This AEM short ram intake also fits 2015 VW Golf R 2.0T models which means even stock 2015 VW Golf R owners are going to have trouble keeping up. Most often, the greatest point of restriction in the factory intake system is the stock air filter box and the disposable automotive air filter. The 2015 VW Golf 1.8T, or 2.0T AEM short ram air intake eliminates the restrictive factory intake tubes, and sound baffling by replacing them with a mandrel bent aluminum air intake tube coupled to a free flowing AEM Dryflow synthetic air filter. The aluminum air intake tube is protected with a wrinkle-red powder coat to compliment the traditional red GTI stripe and interior highlights. The 2015 VW Golf 1.8T, GTI 2.0T, and Golf R 2.0T AEM short ram air intake system is designed to deliver as much unrestricted air as the engine can use quickly and with the fewest bends possible.

Additionally, the 2015 VW Golf 1.8T, GTI 2.0T, and Golf R 2.0T AEM short ram air intake system incorporates an application specific powder coated heat shield which blocks hot air from rising off the exhaust manifold into the air filter, as well as sealing against the car’s hood. The design and testing of AEM short ram air intake 21-746WR resulted in dyno proven increases in horsepower and torque across the entire RPM range. On the dyno the 2015 VW Golf, GTI, and Golf R AEM short ram intake produced an estimated additional 13 horsepower at a commonly used 3,800 rpm when installed on a 2015 Volkswagen GTI 2.0T with manual transmission. Equally beneficial to acceleration and performance is the estimated gain of 26 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. In addition to simply increasing horsepower, lowering restriction and increasing airflow will help the turbo charger to spool up quicker which results in improved acceleration and drivability.

Advanced Dryflow, non-woven, oil free, synthetic air filter media makes up the core of an AEM short ram air intake system’s performance air filter. Non-oiled Dryflow air filter media allows for easy cleaning, durable service, and excellent airflow without sacrificing filtration efficiency and engine protection. An AEM Dryflow air filter is able to provide performance and protection without the need for air filter oil. When it comes time to service the air filter, cleaning can be easily completed using the AEM air filter cleaner 1-1000. Cleaning is performed by following a simple four step process. Because an AEM dry filter does not require oil, the air filter can be returned to service sooner and with less effort.

This AEM short ram air intake system for 2015 VW Golf 1.8T, and 2015-2016 VW GTI 2.0T, and Golf R 2.0T models comes complete with all the necessary hardware and step by step installation instructions. To provide peace of mind, AEM Induction Systems stands behind its products with a Lifetime Limited Warranty. AEM Cold Air Intakes Are Designed to Make Power Safely With Cool Dense Air

AEM cold air intake positions the Dryflow synthetic air filter in a location that provides cooler air
The traditional AEM cold air intake (CAI) positions the Dryflow synthetic air filter inside of a wheel well, behind a headlight, or in front of the radiator to provide cooler air, while still remaining relatively protected

AEM Induction Systems designs air intake systems in many different configurations, however AEM is best known for its pioneering in the development of cold air intake systems. AEM cold air intake systems trace their roots back to 1994 when AEM began selling its first packaged cold air intake system for the Honda Civic CRX. Increasing horsepower and torque on early fuel injected vehicles was easier than it is today. However, even then AEM understood the benefits of providing cool dense air from outside the engine bay in the quest to improve power safely and efficiently. AEM engineers seek to bring cooler air into the engine because cooler air has greater mass. Paying attention to air inlet temperature management during AEM cold air intake development helps to bring in air with greater mass which encourages consistent and reliable horsepower and torque gains.

This enclosed air box cold air intake system for 2011-2014 Ford F150 EcoBoost models features an additional air inlet source molded into the air box

Ideally AEM will design a cold air intake, CAI for short, to relocate the air filter outside of the engine compartment. The traditional cold air intake positions the air filter inside of a wheel well, behind a headlight, or in front of the radiator to provide cooler air, while still remaining relatively protected. However, modern cars and trucks are becoming increasingly 2 in an effort to squeeze power, fuel efficiency, and low emissions from every drop of gasoline or diesel fuel. This has required AEM engineers to continually stay at the forefront of AEM CAI development and has resulted in some rather creative cold air intake designs.

The unique Mini Cooper S AEM cold air intake system uses a molded hood scoop to direct cold air into the new AEM enclosed air box for more power and acceleration

AEM believes that even though a long air intake tube leading to the front wheel well may not be suitable for every vehicle, maintaining inlet air temperature (IAT) at or near ambient air temperature is crucial. This has led to AEM Induction Systems utilizing alternative CAI designs such as enclosed air box designs, additional fresh air sources, or even a hood scoop in the quest for making usable horsepower, safely, and consistently. The engine control unit (ECU) in modern cars will retard the ignition timing as air temperature increases causing the engine to run more conservatively and in turn, making less power. This makes airflow, air temperature, and air quality coming into the engine important for maintaining peak performance.

Not every AEM CAI uses a long intake tube, the AEM 2015 Subaru WRX STi cold air intake places the AEM Dryflow Air Filter outside of the engine bay to help bring cool, dense, air into the engine

AEM engineers design AEM cold air intakes as a fully integrated component of the vehicle. Because increasing airflow and reducing restriction is only part of the power equation, significant testing is performed to assure proper air inlet temperature management. AEM cold air intake owners can feel confident knowing that their AEM CAI is designed to improve performance safely and in a usable RPM range. AEM cold air intake systems are backed with a lifetime limited warranty giving further assurance that AEM is confident in its products.

AEM Air Intake Equipped Supercharged 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 Makes 475 HP at the Wheels

Dyno testing shows that Garret’s GMC Sierra 5.3L V8 engine made 475 horsepower with AEM air intake
Dyno testing shows that Garret’s GMC Sierra 5.3L V8 engine made 475 horsepower and 421 lb-ft of torque at the rear Raceline Wheels wrapped in 35” General Tire Grabber all terrain tires

AEM Induction Systems caught up with Garrett Harmon at the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, Nevada to check out his 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 nicknamed Vanilla Heat. While the truck’s name might elicit a chuckle, Garrett will assure you this truck is serious business. For starters, Garrett works for Magnuson Superchargers in Ventura, California. For over thirty years Magnuson Superchargers has specialized in designing and building superchargers to original equipment standards with the goal of offering big horsepower gains, drivability, and a long-lasting, reliable product. Magnuson stands behind its supercharger systems with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty and by utilizing the latest in computer design technology Magnuson is able to deliver power over the entire RPM range while continuing to meet emissions and fuel economy standards.

Garrett Harmon adapted AEM cold air intake 21-8030DC on his 2013 GMC Sierra
With minor modifications Garrett Harmon adapted AEM cold air intake 21-8030DC to be compatible with the Magnuson Supercharger forced air induction system on his 2013 GMC Sierra

This approach to design, engineering, and power delivery mirrors those of AEM Induction Systems, and when Garrett was considering a cold air intake for his truck AEM CAI 21-8030DC seemed like a match made in heaven. AEM Induction Systems engineers design AEM intake systems as a fully integrated component of the vehicle. Improved airflow is only part of the power equation. Significant efforts are put into designing and intake that will draw in cool air at or near ambient air temperature. This is done to maintain inlet air temperature (IAT) readings within factory specifications as well as improve power delivery safely, and at usable RPM ranges.

An OLB LED roof mounted light bar and Gold Standard Lighting headlights make sure Garret can see any off-road obstacle long before the Pure Performance Suspension has to soak it up

High airflow and excellent engine protection through filtration efficiency is something every high performance engine requires. Advanced Dryflow, non-woven, oil free, synthetic air filter media is at the heart of AEM cold air intake 21-8030DC. AEM Dryflow Air filters incorporate a three-dimensional synthetic filtering medium pleated between structural screen wire to enhance airflow capabilities. The AEM cold air intake system adapted onto Garrett’s 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 includes other features that go above and beyond those normally used in an aftermarket air intake. The enclosed air box design seals the cold air intake system from under hood heat and serves to draw air from outside the engine compartment. Another benefit of the enclosed air box design is that the AEM Dryflow synthetic air filter is protected from splashes of water, or mud, and the included air filter minder means Garrett will know without looking at the filter if it needs to be cleaned.

Garrett’s 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L packs quite a punch with the Magnuson Supercharger, AEM cold air intake system, and Lingenfelter Performance camshaft. A Black Widow Exhaust setup helps the 5.3L engine exhale all the forced air and spent gasses it just inhaled. Dyno testing shows that Garret’s 5.3L V8 engine made 475 horsepower and 421 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. This is no simple feat as the lifted Sierra is running 35” General Tire Grabber all terrain tires mounted on Raceline Wheels. AEM dyno testing showed that a completely stock 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L made 248 horsepower. This means that Garrett’s 2013 Sierra 1500 is making somewhere in the neighborhood of 225, or 190%, more horsepower than stock!

The 2013 Sierra’s aggressive stance comes from the installation of a Pure Performance Suspension long travel suspension lift. This lift kit is built for true off-road performance, not for show. It only provides around 3” of lift in the front of the truck, however wheel travel is significantly increased boasting up to 16” total wheel travel. Remote reservoir coilover shocks provide suspension damping up front, and remote reservoir shocks mated to a custom Atlas leaf spring packs supports the rear. An OLB LED roof mounted light bar and Gold Standard Lighting headlights make sure Garrett can see any off-road obstacle long before the 475 horsepower 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 races past or over it.
