One of the greatest minds of art and science, Leonardo da Vinci wrote, "Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses. Especially, learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else and only through experimentation can we know anything."

The artist and visionary scientist did not compartmentalize these two disciplines, he in fact revealed them to be his primary guiding principles, as he repeatedly proved that the definitive qualities of the mechanical world and the infinite possibilities of art, dance to the same beat.

Blurred lines - that's what contemporary car modification exercises - between leading edge automotive wizardry and present-day artistic expressions. And, Artist/Designer/C.E.O. of Exotic Engravings, Shawn Lisjack, has literally etched his own uniquely personalized niche for art-tomotive, car-ativeness.

"When it comes to hand engraving, I am completely self taught," states Lisjack. "2007 is when I first started experimenting on various mediums with Dremel tools and accessories. My idea for hand engraving on an entire car came to me when I began engraving, but at that time, I had very little experience. More practice, technique, and skill were definitely needed before taking on such a feat. After thousands of hand engraving hours, I felt more than comfortable to start hand engraving on an entire car. Then in 2010 the Engraved EG, the ‘World's First Fully Hand Engraved Car' project was born. Currently, there are well over 5,500 hand engraving hours invested into the Engraved EG."

The Engraved EG is a custom built fully sponsored 1992 Honda Civic Hatchback VX (EG). The purpose of this unique one-of-a-kind vehicle is to display multiple (hand engraved) company logos, such as AEM, and showcasing high quality sponsored products, in order to help facilitate contributing brand name awareness.

"The 2012 SEMA Show was an incredible experience for me, as well as for the Engraved EG," says Lisjack. "SEMA is by far my favorite event to attend. I met so many great people/automotive enthusiasts during the show last year and I answered as many questions as I could about the Engraved EG project. At times it did get a little overwhelming. 2013 will be the second year in a row in which the Engraved EG will be making an appearance. I can't wait to meet more of the Engraved EG fans and visit with all of the car's sponsors."

Since 2007 Lisjack has created well over 200 original hand engraved pieces, using various mediums including raw and painted aluminum, sheet metal, wood, marble, glass, mirrors, racing helmets, acrylic, carbon steel, carbon fiber sheets, car parts, Zippo lighters, watches, iPad's, iPhone cases. "Most of my artworks are automotive themed," adds Lisjack, "but I have also engraved company logos, animals, flowers, plants, portraits, and much more."

Lisjack may have home-schooled himself about the virtues of the Dremel, but his leanings toward the artist light have been with him since early on. "As a child, I used coloring books, watercolors, pencils, markers, and chalk to create works of art," explains Lisjack. "My idea to start hand engraving began when I came across an old ‘Scratch Art' piece of artwork that I created back in high school. Scratch art paper is a fairly thick piece of paper with multiple layers. Once the top layer is scratched away, the bottom layer is revealed. The top layer of scratch paper is typically black or a dark color. The bottom layer is a contrasting color. (Colored, multi-colored, silver, gold, etc.)."

Lisjack is essentially and effectively tattooing an assortment of objects, including an entire car, so it's reasonable to assume the demands for his artwork are increasing. "Ever since the Engraved EG was on the front page of Yahoo for two days (April 2013), it has been receiving a lot of attention," confirms Lisjack. "Many fans/people have inquired about having custom hand engraving work done on their cars, but a high percentage of those people have declined due to the cost. Custom hand engravings can be very expensive. I do work with those clients however, so I can keep them within their budget. That way anyone can have an opportunity to own a piece of my custom engraving work."

The next big show the Engraved EG and Shawn Lisjack will be attending is the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 5 - 8, 2013.

Keith Hathaway and His Chevrolet Green and Silverado Hit the Car Show Circuit for AEM

The polished AEM Brute Force Intake System with pre-filter wrap is a big hit at every show Hathaway attends.
The polished AEM Brute Force Intake System with pre-filter wrap is a big hit at every show Hathaway attends.
As soon as the first Ford Model T, aka the Tin Lizzie, rolled off the assembly line, you can bet that someone had already figured out how to bump up the sluggish transversely mounted semi-elliptical spring suspension. They probably added some sweet rims too, and the factory paint seriously had to go. Individualizing our rides is as old as the wheel, and car modification is as much a form of personal artistic expression, as it is a compliment to a particular vehicle model. The vehicles lines, its platform or the image it projects, whatever the reason is, it inspired someone to transform and elevate it into something greater. Something transcendently unique.

A 1994 Chevrolet Silverado c/k1500 dubbed "Green and Silver-ado" is Keith Hathaway's latest medium of choice for car-tistic expression. "I bought it 2003 with the full intent of making it a full custom show truck," said Hathaway. "The build went in stages, first I installed an Air Ride Technologies strong arm kit and an Ektensive Metal works two link kit, two 7gallon air tanks, SMC valves, and the entire system is plumbed with -6 AN fittings and 3/8 stainless steel braded hose to get the truck to lay frame."

Hathaway has been sponsored and representing AEM in car shows since January 2013. "I got connected with AEM through a friend who is currently sponsored by AEM, Shawn Lisjack (world's first fully hand engraved EG - look for his story here soon)," he says. "AEM has provided Green and Sliver-ado with their polished brute force intake system, pre-filter wrap, and tons of media coverage on Facebook."

After enjoying the initial phase of his modification for a couple of years Hathaway decided he was ready to throw in all the way, so he disassembled the truck down to the frame with a little help from his friends and his car-ative juices began to flow.

"We stock floor body dropped my truck 3½ inches putting the body on the ground and the doors 1¼ inches off the ground. With the truck disassembled I began the metal work on the exterior. The door handles, a third brake light, steak pocket, gas door, tailgate, and taillights were all shaved smooth. The fuel filler neck was relocated into the notch cover inside the bed, which was constructed using stock bed floor material, then sprayed with Line-X. I installed a roll pan with flush mount L.E.D taillights, a snug top Tonneau Cover, and Good Mark Steel Cowl Induction Hood."

"Once the exterior metal work was complete Clint Lasker , Louis, and Gordo smoothed, sanded, primed, and painted the Galapagos green and olive silver base coat using PPG paint. After the base coat was applied the truck was taken to Mike Lewis where he painted the hand brushed wood grain graphics, and then it was sprayed with PPG concept 2010 clear coat. The interior plastic has been smoothed and painted Galapagos green to match the exterior. The seats are from a '99 Suburban, with the arm rests and headrests deleted and upholstered with light grey suede and light titanium faux leather .The stereo is an Alpine head unit, JL audio speakers with a custom made door pods, and center console amp rack that holds 3 JL audio Amplifiers."

"The engine is a 5.7L V8, with a York 210 air-conditioning compressor converted into an air compressor to power the air suspension, Accel ignition, March pulleys, Flowmaster exhaust, and the AEM brute force intake with pre-filter wrap. The truck rides on 20" Boss 308 rims and Powerstop cross drilled rotors. I did everything except spray the color or stitch the seats".

Hathaway has modding in his DNA, his father owns a body shop and as a teen that's where he began honing his chops. After that he picked up some skills working at an autosound shop, and finally he added ironworker to his resume. "Working in these trades enabled me to have the knowledge and experience to complete this and all my projects," Hathaway reasoned. "My first build was a 1955 De Soto, which was completely shaved and lowered. Then I built a 1990 Honda Civic with a body kit, fully built suspension, custom interior, and engine swap (w/AEM Intake)."
The Green and Silverado's doors rest a mere 1 1/4 inches off the ground.
The Green and Silverado's doors rest a mere 1 1/4 inches off the ground.

"My latest build is the Green and Silverado which took eight years to complete overall. The Green and Silverado will attend 10-15 big shows including SEMA and a handful of small shows and cruise nights. When I'm not attending shows I spend time with my club Down To Earth. My wife and son enjoy taking the truck around town on our own little cruises, also we are Disneyland junkies (we go once or twice a month) or you can find me at Dodger stadium or in front of the television watching the Dodgers game. I represent AEM because of the high quality product they produce. The performance, fuel economy, torque gains and style. My AEM Brute Force intake delivers on all of those."

The next recreation for the Green and Silverado involves an engine swap with either a LS1 or a LQ9. "It depends on availability," Hathaway adds, "and maybe some billet wheels. And then I'll finally start doing shows abroad."

"Also, I would like to thank my wife, Autumn Hathaway, Bruce and Margie Hathaway, Rich and Helen Eaton, Mike Lewis, Chris Couto, Phil Hernandez, Rich Clark, Kc Hathaway, Richie Eaton, Kyle Hathaway, Justin Mc Nab, Clint Lasker, Louis, Gordo, Shawn Lisjack, Aaron at Newhall muffler and Fab, AEM Performance Intakes, Erik Forbes, Line-X of Simi Valley, Andy at My Tire Store, Mark Shaffer, And Larry at auto service and body for making this dream a reality Like the green and Silverado page on Facebook."

Andrew Veale Installs Air Intake on 2013 Veloster Turbo & Shares the DIY Success with the World

Andrew Veale bought his 2013 Veloster Turbo based on performance and that it had enough room for his three dogs.
Andrew Veale bought his 2013 Veloster Turbo based on performance and that it had enough room for his three dogs.
For some people the compelling resonance of an AEM cold air intake system is as irresistible as the song of the sirens. Take Tampa, Florida's, Andrew Veale, he's an EDI Implementation tech by day, but at night he becomes an autosound aficionado perfecting the sweet reverberation on his ride. The man recognizes a perfect note when he hears it. Veale's ride is a 2013 Veloster Turbo, for which he recently purchased and installed an AEM Cold Air Intake (21-724C) by himself, instantly deepening the bond between man and machine. AEM's 21-724P Hyundai Veloster air intake is also available for 2013 models.

Veale bought his car in October 2012, before that he was looking to buy either the Hyundai Genesis coupe or the Veloster, but the numbers on the naturally aspirated model were abysmal in his opinion. So when he heard about the Veloster Turbo the scales began to tip in the direction of the VT, especially considering that by adding the AEM Cold Air Intake, the overall horsepower and torque numbers jumped up significantly.
Andrew Veale installed the AEM cold air intake on his car and posted the easy to follow instructions online.
Andrew Veale installed the AEM cold air intake on his car and posted the easy to follow instructions online.
The final decision came down to a matter of space though, as the coupes' are very limited at best and Veale has three dogs. "I figured that the Veloster Turbo would be a better fit for me," he adds.

"This is really my first experience with performance mods," Veale says. "Normally, I focus all of my talent on car audio, trying to get the loudest possible rumble. Now that I had a turbocharged car, I thought it would be appropriate to push the boundaries a little bit and step outside of normalcy. And this air intake is boss."
Andrew Veale says he will embrace any future AEM products for his Veloster.
Andrew Veale says he will embrace any future AEM performance products for his Hyundai Veloster Turbo.

"My car is pretty abnormal looking already (especially painted like a Skittle), so the fact that I've got something under the hood making that much noise has definitely snapped quite a few necks here and there. Standing in front of the car you can hear the air being sucked in; it's amazing just how much air the car needs. Standing behind the car you can hear the exhaust rumbling and tumbling. There are numerous examples of throttle-lag in the Veloster Turbo. This intake seriously diminishes it, if not eliminates it. I floor it and I go - exactly as it should be."

It took just one intake system for Veale's admiration of AEM products to reach near stalker proportions. Veale has gone so far as to post his appreciation for his cold air intake on two Veloster Turbo forums, where he shares the love by detailing the ease of installation for other newbies to use and enjoy under the common thread - AEM CAI: DIY Installation and Post-Install Opinions.

"I wanted to post the install instructions because I hate going into things blind," Veale explains. "I've had numerous other projects that I have done with my cars that I have had no idea where to start, what wire to snip, or what bolt to loosen. I wanted to let anyone who was interested know about the AEM CAI and how easy it was to install, and to give my opinion of it."

As an EDI Implementation tech, Veale sets up software for clients and configures them to send medical claims electronically. It's an exacting job focused on details. And, as a car enthusiast he's a bona fide gear-head, with the same attention to the little things. Veale says he has been working on his cars as long as he can recall.

"I remember when I knew nothing about cars and it would cost a pretty penny to have someone screw me out of my earnings to do something so simple. Basically, the only things I don't do are stuff that the dealer does for free, like oil changes, rotations and balances, etc."

"It's like I told George (Hsieh) when I first talked to him - this is the beginning of a great friendship between AEM and me. I'm very impressed with the quality of the product and the customer service you guys have given me. You've managed to make me feel like I've been with you guys for years and that's not an easy task to accomplish."

AEM makes it easy to add horsepower and torque to Hyundai Veloster non-turbo and Hyundai Veloster turbo models with 1.6 liter engines. AEM's Cold Air Intakes for Hyundai Veloster page lists all AEM Hyundai Veloster air intakes available to increase performance. AEM's 21-724C and 21-724P cold air intake systems have been designed and engineered with performance in mind. After extensive testing with multiple tube configurations, AEM engineers went with a two-piece, 2.75 inch aluminum intake tube design which routes a 7 inch cone filter down by the front bumper fog light. This allows the air filter to pick up cooler, ambient air flow for more consistent power gains across the powerband. This air intake system provided an estimated 16 horsepower and 14 ft-lbs of torque at 5700 RPM on AEM's in-house dyno. You can read more about this on the 21-724C's and 21-724P's air intake testing summary.

Both the 21-724C and 21-724P cold air intake systems come with all of the required hardware for installation without having to perform any modifications to the Veloster engine or body. To install these cold air intake systems, simply remove the restrictive OEM air intake system and air box, then install AEM's high performance cold air intake following the easy to read, step-by-step installation instructions.

Included in these AEM cold air intake systems is a two piece air intake tube, PCV (positive crankcase vent) and air recirculation vent attachments, air intake tube connection hose, mounting hardware, hose clamps and AEM's 21-2157DK DryFlow® Synthetic (non-oiled) high flow air filter.

  • Excellent Air Filtration
  • Lifetime Limited Warranty

AEM's 21-2157DK washable and reusable air filter was chosen for its air flow characteristics and large surface area. Specifically, the larger surface area can provide high air flow rates while still offering excellent air filtration for your engine. In addition to the filtration benifit, by having a larger surface area, this performance air filter can go up to 100,000 miles before cleaning is needed, depending on driving conditions. When it does become time to clean your air filter, simply spray on the AEM synthetic air filter cleaner, rinse out the cleaner and dirt until the water runs clean, then let the air filter dry. Once dry, the air filter can be reinstalled.

In short, the AEM 21-724C and 21-724P cold air intake systems will provide a great performance add on for the 2016 Hyundai Veloster models with the turbo charged 1.6 liter engine. Furthermore, these air intake systems are covered by AEM's limited lifetime warranty.

AEM's 21-724C and 21-724P cold air intake systems fit the following Hyundai Veloster models:

•2016 HYUNDAI VELOSTER TURBO 1.6L
•2015 HYUNDAI VELOSTER TURBO 1.6L

Team Hybrid's Mike Gutierrez Discusses Mitsubishi Evolution X and the Car Modification Culture

Having recently removed the backseat for his car Gutierrez says his modification jones is getting pretty serious.
Having recently removed the backseat for his car Gutierrez says his modification jones is getting pretty serious.

Over 18 years ago, January 7, 1995 to be precise, Oxnard, California's James Lin had an epiphany, an automotive apparition as it were. Lin envisioned a new kind of car club, one that perpetuated family and friendship, and adhered to fundamental principles like honor, trust and patience. The manifestation of Lin's dream became Team Hybrid.

"I've been in different car clubs in the past, but I always felt a certain ingredient was missing," Mike Gutierrez remarked. "I still remember the day in April of 2013 when Jesse Ramirez, recruiter and webmaster for Team Hybrid called to extend the invitation for me to join Team Hybrid. The feeling was like being called up from the minor leagues to the majors. I felt like I had found a home. Team Hybrid is like no other car organization and it's well respected within the car enthusiasts' realm. My participation with Team Hybrid, simply put, is to be involved with and promote the team. I attend meetings, help set up/break down at events, transport equipment, and offer 'hybrid luv' to other members through assistance, etc. We're a family."

Gutierrez said he was honored to display EVO X for AEM at the 2013 SpoCom car show.
Gutierrez said he was honored to display EVO X for AEM at the 2013 SpoCom car show.

Team Hybrid is open to everyone of any age, gender or ethnicity - hence the term hybrid. The clear common thread connecting members is their unbridled enthusiasm and passion for the vehicle they own. "The vehicles we build become hybrids in that they are modified with other distinctive parts inside and out, displaying each member's personal creativity," explains Gutierrez. "There is a bond that is formed between all the members and a willingness to answer a shout out for help."

Gutierrez's ride of choice is a Mitsubishi EVO X. "It was used in the World Rally Championship and it continues to be a major weapon of choice for competition in various motorsports," says Gutierrez. "As a kid I fell in love with the Evolution 4. The Evolution platform is a really well thought out car. It has specific mounting points for adding different equipment. It feels good to the driver's hands. And, although it's been tamed for the road, the sound of engine with the turbo spooling begs you to accelerate."

"Getting my EVO X to where it is now took a lot of work! There was a lot of sweat, love, hate and busted knuckles. But it's all for the love of the car. I've done suspension, wheels, exhaust, and exterior and interior modifications - and I'm not done yet. Now I'm taking my back seat out, so yeah, it's getting pretty serious (ha-ha). My goal for this year is to finish up my exterior and some of my interior."

Mike Gutierrez love affair with Mitsubishi Evolution family started when he was just a kid.
Mike Gutierrez love affair with Mitsubishi Evolution family started when he was just a kid.

Gutierrez displayed his EVO X at the 2013 SpoCom car show in Anaheim, California on behalf of AEM. "The AEM products I'm using are the Intercooler with upper and lower piping, intake and strut bar. I've found these AEM products to be very compatible with my EVO, they're easy to bolt on and didn't take long to install. They are a lot more efficient than the original manufacturer's components. I strongly recommend AEM products. And being a part of the AEM booth car at Spocom was the cherry on top. In addition, I also placed second for best Mitsubishi at Extreme Autofest in San Diego this year."

Gutierrez started honing his modification chops on his very first ride, a 1999 Ford Escort with a dual exhaust, oversized tachometer and LED strips inside, underneath the dash; including type R badges. Looking back he admits it's one of those slap-on-the-forehead moments for him now, adding "I can't believe I did that!" As the years rolled forward Gutierrez got wiser and his technique evolved. "I attended automotive schools and became educated about the dos and don'ts regarding modifying cars, and I continue to learn from good people. My first real build was my 1992 Nissan 240 SX. I'll never forget her."

"I will be making an appearance and joining my other fellow hybrid brothers in the Las Vegas chapter at the End of Summer Showcase Saturday, August 17, 2013. A week later I will be back in Los Angeles with my team at the Freeway Series When We Come Together as One in Pasadena on Sunday, August 25, 2013."
