AEM's David Waterworth In 1st Place After 2 Rounds of 2013 British Drift Championship

David Waterworth's Super Pro car has the most photographed engine compartment since his 2012 rookie season.
David Waterworth's Super Pro car has the most photographed engine compartment since his 2012 rookie season.
"I was at a local track in 2004 and it was my first experience with a rear wheel drive car, as I started to drive faster and faster I noticed that the car had a tendency to slide out, to which I found I could actually control it." That was Scottish hero, David Waterworth's unwitting introduction to drifting. "I worked on this, perfecting my driving style, and that got to a point I thought I would see if anything was happening in the motorsport scene like this."

It wouldn't be overstating matters to refer to Waterworth as drifting's equivalent of "The Natural." Here's a guy that simply enjoyed stomping the throttle and then blissfully indulging himself with controlling the ensuing chaos. "It just so happened that there was a drift license/competition day at Silverstone," Waterworth continues. "I took part and actually acquired a professional license before 12.00pm, so we went for the bigger license (Super Pro), and I acquired this also in the same day, which I was later told was unheard of before."
Waterworth earned his first Super Pro class podium in round 1 at Lydden Hill.
Waterworth earned his first Super Pro class podium in round 1 at Lydden Hill.

Last season was Waterworth's first year of competition in the British Drift Championship, driving a brand new kind of car which hadn't been tested. In the first round of six, Waterworth and his team missed qualifying by two points. "And in our sixth and final round we acquired damage from a spinning lead car, that put us out of the race, but even with this we actually finished the season in twelfth position out of thirty two Super-pro drivers, and in a chassis and conversion," Waterworth explains.

One of the most talked about drivers in the BDC also drives the most ogled and most highly photographed engine compartments. The AEM sponsored driver combined his two favorite cars to create the ultimate drifter conversion, and added credence to the cliché that there's no replacement for displacement.
After the first two rounds, Waterworth is in 1st place overall in the BDC.
After the first two rounds, Waterworth is in 1st place overall in the BDC.

"Our car is the Nissan Silvia s15 platform, 1999 chassis, JDM Import. The Viper engine (8L V10) is from the dream car I hopefully one day, will actually own. I've loved the Dodge Viper car since before I could drive. It's the shear presence of the car and the fact it has a lorry engine to power it. Also, I guess the fact that it's regarded as one of the most dangerous cars to drive, which to me, makes it all the more appealing for the challenge. But unfortunately the Dodge Vipers costs are way beyond what I can afford, so the next option was this engine that was available here in the U.K. at a good price. And without any knowledge available of any swap like this being done, I threw caution to the wind, and with only one dream, I went ahead and started building what is now know as the Viper s15. Which still is the only competition drift car conversion on the track to this day."

Europe's most competitive drift championship the 2013 British Drift Championship started their season in England at Lydden Hill with Waterworth earning his first Super Pro Class podium. "Starting out on the podium is an awesome achievement for me and the team, as we worked so hard last year to make something unique in its design and engine that hadn't been done with a drift car before.

For round 2, and the first time in BDC history, the series visited the Pembrey circuit, located in South Wales just outside the village of Pembrey.

"The fan turnout was really good, there were spectators lined up all around the judged sections of the track. Our practice runs were a struggle, as it was a new track for me and most drivers, but I changed onto a different brand of tires for qualifying and this helped to improve grip and control of the car through the course, giving me a 2nd place qualification result."

"Then we went straight into the top 32 twin battles, where I progressed through many very exciting and technical battles to take me to the top 4. Unfortunately because of a few adjustment errors, I remained in 4th place and narrowly missed getting another podium finish. I do hope we can continue the success, but if I can get on podium again, I have found that consistency is the key to drifting championships. We will have to see how things turn out as there are some truly excellent teams and drivers in this championship."

Demonstrating that consistency is indeed the key to clinching titles, with his 3rd place at Lydden Hill, and fourth at Pembrey, Waterworth currently holds 1st place in the overall Super Pro standings.

"Round 3 will take place at Teesside Autodrome in Middlesborough on July 6th and 7th," Waterworth adds. "I have been to this track before, and with the changes that we plan to make to the car, we hope this will give us the advantage to be back on the podium.

2011 and 2012 Nissan Altima models with the 2.5 liter engine are sporty four door vehicles that are a blast to drive alone or with the family. The 2013 Nissan Altima Coupe with the same efficient 2.5 liter engine is even more sporty and all three of these vehicles can add more power and performance with an AEM air intake system. AEM started looking at the best ways to increase the performance of these Nissan Altima models. They found by utilizing AEM's ETi technology on their 41-1003P and 41-1003C air intake systems, the Nissan Altima gained an estimated 3 horsepower and 4 ft-lb of torque at 4900 RPM at the wheels over stock. Power was gained throughout the RPM range in this test.

AEM's 41-1003P (polished tube finish) and 41-1009C (gun-metal gray finish) ETi air intake systems come with all the necessary adapters and components for a fast and easy installation. These air intake systems include a mandrel bent aluminum air intake tube, heat shield, reusable Dryflow synthetic air filter, fresh air inlet tube, hose clamps, nuts and bolts needed to install it on one of the Nissan Altima models listed below. AEM's Nissan Altima air intakes also provide connections for the mass air sensor and PCV connections.

These air intake systems utilize AEM's advanced ETi (electronically tuned intake system) technology which is designed to help improve air flow and reduce restriction. A lot of air intake systems use air flow modifiers like signal conditioners, ventrui inserts or smaller diameter tubes to make sure the mass air sensor reads the air correctly. The problem is these modifiers also cause restriction on the engine. Since the ETi module corrects the signal from the sensor to the computer, AEM is able to eliminate these modifiers. This allowed AEM's engineers to "super tune" these air intake systems for the Nissan Altima's 2.5 liter engine, sensor and computer setup, and gain more horsepower at the wheels.

The heat shield provides benefits by isolating the air filter, and the air that is being sucked into the engine, from the hot air under the hood, which can cause a loss in performance. The included fresh air inlet tube, which attches to the heat shield, is designed to replace the stock inlet tube with a more efficient design. This design allows cooler outside air to get to the air filter. The combination of the heat shield with the fresh air intake tube means that you end up with cooler air going into the engine and better performance. To top everything off, AEM covers these air intake systems with their Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The 41-1003P and 41-1003C air intake systems include a large AEM high flow air filter 21-203DOSK. This washable and reusable air filter uses AEM's Dryflow synthetic filter media, which can go up to 100,000 miles between cleaning. Since the Dryflow media does not use oil this air filter is very easy to clean using AEM's Dry Flow Synthetic air filter cleaner, part 1-1000.

AEM 41-1003P and 41-1003C cold air intake systems fit the following models:
2013 NISSAN ALTIMA COUPE 2.5L
2012 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5L
2011 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5L

AEM Race Top Universal Clamp-On Air FIlters for High Air Flow and Engine Protection

AEM 21-203D-XK Universal Air Filter with Race Top
AEM 21-203D-XK Universal Air Filter with Race Top
Racers and drivers know that a powerful engine demands high airflow in order to ensure proper performance. The trick is to find an air filter which is easy to use, capable of flowing high volumes of air and has a high efficiency so it can stop harmful dirt and contaminants from getting to the motor. Well for racers and drivers with such needs around the globe, AEM has designed an air filter capable of meeting such a demanding set of requirements.
Universal Race Top Air Filter AEM 21-201D-XK

The 21-201D-XK and 21-203D-XK are two of AEM's universal clamp-on, standard Dryflow cone air filters that include AEM's "Race Top" filter media on the end of the filter instead of it being closed. With this design, AEM's "Race Top" filters let air flow in from the top as well as though the sides, which allows for higher air flow capability, making it perfect for racing or getting a great custom look under the hood. These cone air filters have a wire screen for rigid structural strength. The screen holds AEM's washable and reuseable oil-free synthetic media in place. Basically the 21-201D-XK and 21-203D-XK air filters have been designed to provide a great combination of air flow, filtration, and performance. In addition, they also come with a 1 year limited warranty.

Another benefit of AEM's high flow air filter media, is that it does not need to be cleaned that often. AEM Dryflow universal air filters do not use oil, so there is no chance of over-oiling your filter thus taking the guesswork out of servicing your AEM air filter. When cleaning, AEM's synthetic air filter cleaner, part number 1-1000 is designed to help loosen and dissolve air filter dirt and road grime so it can be easily and quickly rinsed away with water. Once the air filter is dry, it can be reinstalled.

AEM Dryflow air filters have a low restriction design and provide great engine protection. AEM 21-201D-XK and 21-203D-XK performance air filters have low restriction which help to increase horsepower and torque. They can be clamped on to virtually any 2-1/2 inch or 3 inch intake tube.

The 21-201D-XK performance air filter offers a 2-1/2 inch inside diameter mounting inlet, a base diameter of 6 inches, air filter body height of 5-1/2 inches and with a tapered cone air filter "Race Top" with an outside diameter of 5 inches. The 21-203D-XK offers the same air filter dimensions as the 21-201D-XK, except it comes with a 3 inch mounting inlet. These racing style universal clamp-on performance air filters offer a great balance of air flow and filtration.
