According to Bruce Smith, editor of ProPickup magazine, Randall-Reilly is the "Leader in publishing B2B magazines, targeting the construction and over-the-the road markets." That in mind, when the company began tossing around ideas for a SEMA 2012 project vehicle, it only made sense to tackle a theme that would interest their readers.

Smith, who was also the project vehicle manager/design/concept would have no complications filling those shoes. He was gearing up to attend SEMA for his twenty-eighth year. In fact, he had been involved in building project vehicles, including four wheel drives and SUVs since 1984.

The magazine, on the other hand, came to fruition in 2010, and this would be their third project vehicle/sweepstakes truck build. "It takes months of coordinating products and installation time to bring a concept to reality," explained Smith. "It takes several days of heavy-duty detailing before it rolls into the convention center."

Referring to their choice of 2008 Sierra 3500 HD Crew Cab Dually 4X4 for the build, the editor said, "Our readers are all contractors or work in the heavy construction/road building trades. They all use service vehicles, so "Big Red" was a natural."

One might suspect that Smith and Randall-Reilly could have simply built a service truck and added some fancy wheels and a fresh coat of paint, but simply put, that was a far cry from the team's mindset. Their theme would call for a couple of twists. First, the beautiful brilliant-red rig would be designed to tackle any terrain on or off-road. In fact, while describing the vehicle, Smith said, "No road, no problem."

The second twist separated the vehicle from other service trucks as much as the first modification, if not more so. While the designing process was on the ground floor, the team devised a plan deeming the rig's functional abilities two fold. By installing a Fleetwest removable service body, the pickup could be used for other needs if necessary, which in turn would maximize its utility value.

Referring to various aspects of a build that would lend to the ultimate service truck, Smith stated, "There's a long list of modifications." Eager to provide ample clearance for off-road use, the team installed a 4-6" adjustable lift kit. Anxious to provide a smooth and dependable suspension, Smith and the crew turned to Hellwig Products.

Still focused on going where no other service truck has gone before and bearing durability in mind, they went with 35-inch, ten lug American Force wheels. With performance and style in mind they chose an aggressive tread offered by Toyo tires.

In the event the terrain grew rugged to the extreme, Mile Marker electric wenches were mounted on front and back bumpers supplied by Fab Four bumpers. Trailers are an essential tool in the world of heavy construction, so it was only fitting to depend upon B&W Trailer Hitches to fill their needs.

Unlike a majority of the other vehicles that would roll into SEMA 2012, this rig would be designed with the rigors of working in an extreme environment in mind. Not only did the truck have to be designed in a manner that it could perform in less than optimal conditions, but it was also essential that the finished product was the epitome of good looks.

Focused on providing SEMA attendees with a beautiful build, they were faced with choosing products that were aesthetically pleasing, yet durable. Amp Research provided showy, yet functional steps for the vehicle, and Husky liners proved perfect for protecting the truck's bed. While considering protection, it was essential to protect the tools of the trade from theft. That in mind, Smith went with Bolt for his locking accessories, and Buyers Products Company accented the build with various hardware.

Depending upon Flow to produce quality fuels tanks, they then turned to Vanair to provide the build with a steady and reliable source of compressed air.

SEMA attendees peering in the cab likely appreciated the modifications lending to comfort, style and usability. Marathon Seat covers lent to a sporty and comfortable ride, and USFL Tracking provided GPS capabilities, ensuring the rig could find its way into the most remote job sites.

Of course, to build the service truck of all service trucks, work had to be done under the hood as well. BD Diesel Performance supplied an array of parts that would ensure optimal performance, and energy would be maximized with the assistance of Hypertech.

Ensuring the engine remained contaminant free was key to a long and productive life, and Smith's team turned to AEM products for their filtering needs. Although this was his first time to use AEM, smith quickly grew confident in their quality and design.

At the project's end Randall-Reilly and Bruce Smith finally had the opportunity to step back and admire the fruit of their labors. As did the SEMA 2012 attendees, many others recently had the opportunity to see the epitome of sporty and practical, as "Big Red" was featured in the October 2012 issue of "Propickup" magazine.

With the build behind him, Bruce Smith is already looking to the future. When asked about upcoming plans, the editor said, "We plan to build another sweepstakes truck to give away to one lucky reader. Our 2013 project truck concept is a secret to be revealed in our April 2013 issue. But it will be a 4X4 crew cab diesel any contractor would love to have in their fleet."

AEM Dryflow Air Filter part number 28-20128
AEM Dryflow Air Filter part number 28-20128

Since the early days of the automobile, German engineering has delivered some of the most popular and innovative vehicle concepts and models delivering both power and thrills for drivers. One of the most iconic car models in the automotive world is such a vehicle, the Volkswagen Beetle. With a recent revival and complete redesign debuting in 1998, the "new" Beetle has updated some of the classic model styling and design with modern technology and performance bringing the experience of sorely punched shoulders to a new generation of road trip "Slug Bug" players. Along with the Beetle, other popular German models from around the globe include the Volkswagon Lavida, Seat Toledo and Leon, Skoda Octavia and the Audi A3 and TT models.

In keeping with German performance and engineering, AEM has developed a high performance air filter, part number 28-20128, to improve airflow and protect the vehicle's engine from harmful contaminants. The 28-20128 air filter is a Dryflow synthetic air filter engineered to capture harmful particles while allowing high air flow. It allows air passing through to the engine to do so with less restriction than a disposable paper air filter and without the use of oil. This AEM washable and reusable replacement filter can go up to 50,000 miles before needing to be cleaned, depending on driving conditions. The 28-20128 can be cleaned easily using AEM Filter Cleaner 1-1000.

The 28-20128 replacement air filter installs easily into the vehicle's factory air box and is covered by AEM's Lifetime Limited Warranty, making it the last air filter you will ever need to buy.

AEM performance air filter 28-20128 will fit the following Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat and Audi models:

Chevy, Pontiac, & Buick Sedan Owners Get Performance & Protection with AEM Dryflow Air Filter

caption
Part number 28-20141
In 1999 and 2000, GM offered a number of classic performance sedans outfitted with powerful V6 engines. The Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevy's Impala and Monte Carlo and Buick's Regal, Centruy and LeSabre are the standouts of these sedans. Having previously shown a project car at SEMA, Hydroholics LLC. president/owner, Eric Towne, and co-owner, Leslie Towne eagerly got the ball rolling on their 2012 SEMA build.

Some project car builders incorporate extreme modifications to their undertaking. To the contrary, Hydroholics had a conviction to abide by the adage "Less is more" as their scheme. "We just really wanted to have a car that was clean and simple," explained Eric Towne. "Nothing too wild. But it would still stand out from the others."

Lacking the resources to physically embark upon the project themselves, the team opted to sponsor the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe and turn to those whom they considered the best-of-the-best in their fields to actually execute the build.

"We have some of the best shops here in Arizona build the vehicles," stated Townes. "This is actually only my second year going to SEMA, and it takes some time preparation to get everything ready for your vehicle."

Immediately upon leaving the dealership, the car became the focus of the needed modifications to meet Hydroholics standards and aspirations. The first item on the agenda was an exhaust system. That in mind, they turned to ARK Performance cat back exhaust to perform the task with confidence.

Although this was only their second SEMA build, the crew at Hydroholics was perfectly aware that it was essential for their project to please the eye. Working with Vossen, they came up with 20x10.5" and 20x9" wheels to promote a look of beauty and performance.

Hydroholics is proud of the fact that they supply one of the top of the line hydraulic suspension parts on the market, and would certainly add their know-how and service to the project. The hydraulic system they chose to install consisted of a two-pump, eight-dump setup, and two kinetic batteries. "This feature is what gets most of the attention on the car," ensured Towne. "

With the mechanical modifications finalized, Eric and Leslie Towne focused on providing the ride with an impressive sound system. Dropping the vehicle off at Level 10 Audio and Performance, they were pleased with the results. The company installed a pair of 10" JL Audio subs, and built and installed a custom stereo system in the trunk.

Eager to enhance the looks of the car's body the Hydroholics crew turned to BC Auto Body to make a few needed modifications. The largest project pertaining to the exterior of the vehicle consisted of shaving the trunk. With that under their belts they wrapped up the aesthetics by painting some interior pieces, and accented a few pieces under the hood.

Speaking of "under the hood", the Townes opted to make a mechanical modification there as well. "We went with the AEM intake," recalled Eric Towne. "We knew it would produce some impressive horsepower and sound best with the ARK exhaust. I experienced my first AEM product about seven years ago on my Chevy crew cab. I've loved them ever since," he continued. AEM offers some of the best products for any vehicle and will last many years."

With the SEMA show barely in their rear view mirror the fruit of their labors have just begun to come to fruition. In fact, having only displayed the car at one show, they were awarded with first in class and best hydraulics.

Although Eric and Leslie Towne wowed the crowds at the 2012 SEMA in Las Vegas, Nevada, they still have plans to make even more modifications to the their Hyundai Genesis Coupe in the future.

"We plan on displaying the car at many more shows throughout the years, "explained the car owners. "And we hope to receive more awards. Our goal for the upcoming years is to finish the interior, and add some more performance under the hood. Once the project is complete, we are planning to do a photo shoot of the car."

AEM Induction Attends 2012 SEMA Show with Well Received New Products Showcase

AEM Induction made a grand display recently at the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada. As one of the leading aftermarket performance air intake and air filter manufacturers in the industry, AEM Induction’s booth was a showcase for new product lines and one of the hottest Scion FR-S models on the strip.

"The SEMA show this year is a great experience," reported Katie Thomason, an AEM product specialist. "So many people at the show are really excited to see the new product lines that AEM is coming out with, like the exhaust systems and strut bars for the 2013 Scion FR-S. This is my second time at the SEMA show and being here representing AEM Induction, as well as being with our custom FR-S is something that I have really been looking forward to all year."

Katie walked through some of the new product lines offered from AEM Induction including

high performance strut bars, AEM stealth exhaust systems, and complete intercooler systems with charge pipes. "Many of the new product lines are designed for applications that can really benefit from high quality performance parts, like the 2012 Mitsubishi Evolution X, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, or the Scion FR-S and Subaru BR-Z."

AEM strut bars help to correctly stabilize the tops of the struts by tying them together using 1-1/2" steel tubing. This extra strong, but low weight strut bar can also reduce noise vibration, which is crucial for getting the best handling both on and off the track, which is perfect for controlling strut tower tops and camber settings. "When you’re pushing hard, the last thing you want is the vehicle to handle unpredictably," said Katie. "Stabilizing the suspension is important for consistent handling and many other bars have a hinged design and offer less support than a solid bolt-on design like AEM."

AEM didn’t spare on the tech details when showing off their stealth exhaust systems designed for select years of the Kia Soul, Honda CR-Z, Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Scion FR-S/ Subaru BR-Z.

Designed to meet strict OEM standards, AEM stealth exhausts are constructed out of durable stainless steel. They have clean understated tips and create a sporty sound without the annoying drone prevalent in many aftermarket exhaust systems. "These systems are also street legal in all 50 states for certain vehicles and come with a sound test report to verify compliance with any local sound regulations," reported Katie.

"If you have a 2010-2012 Evo X or Genesis Coupe with a 2.0 liter engine, then you are definitely going to want to install AEM’s intercooler system," stated Katie.

Designed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), AEM intercoolers are a perfect modification for more power and performance.

With all these new products for some of the most popular vehicles to hit the streets, AEM has really stepped up to the plate to meet the market’s need for more innovative performance mods. AEM continues to stick with its core lines of high quality intake systems and replacement Dryflow air filters. Be sure to keep your eye out for new innovative designs and increased horsepower gains produced for late model vehicles in the near future.
