Carl Renezeder proves that good-guys do indeed finish first.
The headline alone is staggering. Yet it doesn't nearly tell the entire tale of Carl Renezeder, the veteran racer with the enormous heart of a champion. Renezeder is an old-school driver, which is to say he respects the sport and other competitors, in a manner that's too often still unfamiliar ground for some newbies. Clean driving isn't something he has to think about; it's in his DNA. A win that isn't rightfully earned rings hollow to his way of thinking. After an amazing 2nd place finish in his Pro-2 truck in the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup in Arizona, officials there made a baffling decision to take it away from him. We'll get back to that in a bit, but first let's celebrate all the incredible positives 2011 held for Renezeder.
The 2011 Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing season hosted Carl Renezeder's phenomenal run to his eighth championship. He finished on the podium 14 out of 15 races, with three wins, nine 2nd place finishes, two 3rd place finishes, and one 4th place. The winningest driver in the short-course off-road world now also has the most national titles of any short-course driver in the history of the sport.
AEM's Carl Renezeder inked his name in the record books with his epic 97th race victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
After winning his 97th race last month and mathematically sewing up his eighth title Renezeder told AEM News, "In the last six years, 2010 was the first season that we didn't win a championship so it feels really good to get one back. The best part of this Pro-4 championship is that we were not only consistent in finishes, but we were always competitive. We've been on the podium in all but one race so far this season - it felt like a championship truck all year. I'd have to go back and look at the stats, but in all my years of doing this, I don't think we've ever had such consistent finishes in one class."
Renezeder maintains that all 97 victories have been hard-fought, but his epic battle at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in November, which paid tribute to the late Rick Huseman, will not be forgotten for a very long time. "The best way for us as drivers to honor Rick was to dig deep and battle hard," said Renezeder after the win. "That's exactly what I did and I'm incredibly proud of my entire team for the trucks they gave me this weekend, and our eighth championship."
After winning his eighth national championship Renezeder commented that he couldn't remember having a more consistent season in one class as he had in 2011.
Yet even all those stats and the garland of champion's roses around his neck couldn't lift the spirits of Renezeder and his team when his 2nd place finish in his Pro-2 truck in the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup was taken. Going into the race the AEM sponsored driver remarked, "The entire team has a lot of confidence going into the last race weekend. The pressure is off for the championships, so we can just go out there and have fun and try to win some more hardware for the trophy case and some cash for Christmas presents."
Renezeder decided to take a chance in Sunday's race by choosing his Pro-2 truck over the quicker lap times of his Pro-4 truck. "We had a mechanical failure in the Pro-2 on Saturday early in the race, and I never got a chance to run it hard," explained Renezeder. "I just felt like the truck had something left to prove this season."
In winning his eighth title Renezeder now has the most national titles of any short-course driver in the history of the sport.
He was right. The truck was flawless and Renezeder drove his race, crossing the finish line in 2nd place after some classic on-track battles. He even led the race at one time. He held off some hard-charging Pro-4s, worked his way back forward after getting spun out mid-race, and then made a phenomenal save on the last lap when he was part of a three-truck collision to come across the line in 2nd place. The collision was reviewed by officials for several minutes while the drivers found their way to victory lane. The finishing order was announced and television interviews were conducted, with Renezeder being congratulated by CBS, Versus, SPEED and MavTV for his 2nd place finish. But before they paraded the drivers up onto the podium, the officials announced a change to the finishing order, black-flagging Renezeder, thus moving him back to a 9th place finish.
"I honestly don't understand it," commented a dejected Renezeder. "I feel bad for the team - we didn't deserve to have that taken away from us."
It's a tough way to finish out a great season and a great race. Renezeder always conducts himself with calculating skill and finesse on the track, but more importantly, he drives with an overwhelming will to win and the heart and soul of a true champion. While the 9th place finish was a hard pill to swallow, Renezeder and his team are trying not to let it dampen their spirits from celebrating their eighth championship season.

Since 2001, the SEMA Global Media Awards Program has been a staple of the SEMA Show - the premier automotive accessories trade event in the world. It involves bringing journalists from all over the world to the SEMA show with the purpose of identifying and discovering what new products are likely to succeed in their home countries. The participating media represent some of the industry's top magazines and the editors' opinions are highly regarded and amongst the most respected in the industry. Given their knowledge and expertise about the automotive markets in their countries, there is a high probability that the products they identify truly will resonate with consumers in their respective markets.
Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) has bestowed three 2011 Global Media awards to AEM Induction Systems at this year's SEMA show. These awards place AEM among an elite group of companies that have received one of SEMA's highest honors. The voting panel reviewed nearly 2000 new performance and styling products that were featured at this year's show. From these products the journalists selected 10 products which they believed would be of most interest to their publications' readers and would most likely succeed in their respective countries.

Shane Chattergoon, a judge from Performance Auto and Sound in Canada, identified AEM's innovative Electronically Tuned Intake (ETI) technology when making his decision to award one of the Prestigious Global Media Awards to AEM's 21-725P and 21-725C ETI intake systems for the 2011 through 2014 Scion tC 2.5L. AEM's ETI technology eliminates the need to detune an intake tube to allow the vehicles stock MAF sensor to obtain a useable reading. Basically what an ETI system does is allow the intake tube to utilize a larger diameter intake tube in conjunction with the vehicles stock programming by electronically adjusting the readings between the MAF sensor and the engine's ECU.
Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) has bestowed three 2011 Global Media awards to AEM Induction Systems at this year's SEMA show.
"AEM has always made great products and we are the largest tuner enthusiast publication in Canada. Our readers need to know what is new and available for their Scions," Shane told AEM News. "AEM has strong distribution here and intakes are always one of the first items a tuner replaces. It's a no brainer."
In addition to the award for the ETI system, AEM received awards for the 2011 Honda CR-Z Intake, part numbers 21-700P and 21-700C, and the Mini Cooper S Intake system, part 21-699C, which were nominated by judge Mark Guest of Acclr8.
AEM continues to be an industry leader in innovative automotive intake systems and will hopefully continue to be recognized by automotive enthusiasts and publications around the world. If these awards are a sign of things to come, AEM is going to continue to grow in the aftermarket performance products market and enthusiasts should keep a close eye on AEM's offerings.

Peter Chaney's SEMA featured 2009 Mitsubishi EVO X
Show cars featured at SEMA can be anything from a completely custom vehicle that only has a few manufactured components or a vehicle that displays the best manufactured products around. This keeps things interesting as you walk around and check out the wide array of vehicles featured in the show. For the past two years late model muscle cars have had a huge presence. Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers could be seen where ever you turn. Sport compact vehicles seemed to have a more dominant force this year. One of the more popular vehicles for builders seemed to be the Mitsubishi EVO X. We got a chance to catch up with Peter Chaney to get the rundown on his Red EVO X.
Custom Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X at the 2011 SEMA Show
The Lancer Evolution has been around for quite some time exploiting the advanced performance technologies offered by Mitsubishi. The EVO X comes factory turbo-charged with an all-wheel drive system. The aggressive body styling makes it a perfect candidate for performance upgrades.
Car building for Chaney began 12 years ago. He has attended SEMA 5 times and built 4 show cars in between that time. Chaney currently works at iForged/Forgestar wheels and dabbles in photography/videography. This car build was down to the wire. The biggest challenge was making sure the EVO was ready for the 4 hour drive to Las Vegas. Chaney claims he, "got the car out of the shop Friday night and drove immediately to Vegas."
2009 Mitsubishi EVO X Lancer sporting Toyo tires on 18" Forgestar Wheels at SEMA
Chaney's SEMA 2009 Mitsubishi EVO X Lancer has quite a few upgrades such as:
-AEM Intake system
-Buschur Upper Intercooler Pipe
-Mishimoto Radiator
-K&N Oil filter
-APR Performance GT- 300 Adjustable Wing
-18" Forgestar Wheels
-Eibach Suspension components
-AEM Electronics
-Toyo tires
Chaney's ambitions for his red Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X stem far beyond the 2011 SEMA Show
Chaney has hopes of the vehicle one day becoming a track car he can beat up on weekends and then drive to work on Monday. With all the modifications it is most certainly a car that that looks great as a show car but, is still functional as a race car. In the future he plans to upgrade the turbo to push out a solid 420hp.
AEM Inductions was proud to support Chaney on this build and have kept in contact with him frequently throughout the last year. He was kind enough to display his vehicle in the AEM Inductions booth at both 2011 SPOCOM and 2011 ProMotion shows. We received great feedback from consumers on the car as a whole as well as the AEM intake system on the vehicle. Chaney believes his, "project build is pretty much what a typical tuner would do, but what makes my build a sorta unique is that I incorporated a project build website that shows the parts I've installed by using my photography and video skills. There isnt too many people out there that would take the time to actually sit and review the parts and also give feedback to the manufacturers." There is a lot of work that goes into building a show car not to mention the work that goes into attending car shows and events.
